History of Olumo Rock
Olumo Rock played a pivotal role during the inter-tribal wars of the 1800s, serving as a sanctuary and strategic vantage point for the Egba people. Its name, "Olumo," translates to "God has ended our troubles"—a testament to the rock’s role in providing safety and victory for the people.
The caves within the rock sheltered warriors and families during conflicts, and its elevated position allowed defenders to spot approaching enemies. Over time, the rock became a sacred symbol of resilience, leading to the naming of Abeokuta (*"Under the Rock"*) as the capital of Ogun State.
